Paint horses which are eligible for APHA registration must be direct descendents of registered Paint horses, registered Quarter Horses or registered Thoroughbred horses. To be eligible for Paint horse registration a foal must have at least one Paint parent or have two parents either Quarter Horse or Thoroughbred plus the minimum pink unpigmented skin to apply for registration with the APHA. If a Paint horse is produced by two Quarter Horse or Thoroughbred parents this is called a cropout overo foal. They would be registered within the regular APHA registry. Within the APHA registry there are two categories of registration. These include Regular and Breeding Stock Registrations. Regular registration includes Tobiano, Overo, and Tob-overo (Tovero) color patterns. Breeding Stock Registration includes solid horses from at least one registered Paint Parent.
